The ICOM IP-503H LTE Radio

ICOM equipment is a very tried and trusted brand for the manufacturing and supply of two-way radios - in fact most types of communications. And as new technology comes along and is applied to communications for business (like the current push-to-talk over cellular or PoC LTE) then ICOM will generally embrace it and add products in to their portfolio. This radio offers many great features and we cover those below and offer our own opinion about this handset. and what we really think ...

IP503H LTE PoC Radio

A Feature Packed Radio

LTE/PoC Two Way Radio System from ICOM
A high-quality push-to-talk (PoC) radio system employing the largest UK 4G/3G LTE networks* provides licence-free nationwide communication and instantaneous high-quality full-duplex operation. The PoC system uses the mobile phone network thus reducing the cost of building and maintaining a wide area radio network. An additional layer of security will be provided by the closed system using a private LTE mobile data network. Let's see the features:

Custom coverage by ICOM SIM card

The IP503H can be used to create a closed private network with obvious advantages like no repeaters and whole UK coverage if needed.

Features include a 'full duplex' communication that means you can talk as if you were literally on a telephone.

It's possible to talk with three or more people at once, in a group call situation.

If you purchase a ICOM gateway then it's also possible to communicate to analogue, digital and wireless LAN networks.

No License and no interference!

There is a dispatcher application available to monitor and manage the radios as well as communicating via pc, laptop or other device like a smart phone.

Ready To Go out of the box

Other features include:

  • Built in Bluetooth and GPS
  • Group and ALL calls available
  • Emergency button for lone worker and man-down
  • Vibe alert for calls coming inwards
  • Text message reception and pre-canned message send
  • A 500 memory address book
  • Voice message recording

Here is our opinion of the IP503H ...

For such a small device it's great to see a fully featured LTE PoC radio. If you really need the range on any device then this technology is exceptional and it can certainly deliver range in buckets! Of course its wonderful to see all the features that are available on this device, and from what we see it is an all round robust unit that can stand up to the day to day knocks and blows that are commonplace with radio gear.
We also like the lack of delay that could otherwise occur on some solutions, sometimes the latency on some systems can be intrusive but that seems to be OK on this solution although things can change where third parties are involved.
There is a decent range of accessories for anyone that needs those, including mounting brackets and more for in-vehicle use.
One detracting thing though, like on all LTE PoC radios is the speed that technology can move forward - it's never relenting. And for the latest from ICOM if you have a need for communications nationally, as well as to analogue or digital radios there may be a better choice, because for the LTE only IC503H you need a gateway, whereas the IP730D unit also from ICOM can communicate with all three technologies without any specialised gateway.
The IP503H is IP67 dustproof and waterproof and that's important for most users. And of course this unit needs no license from Ofcom, just as other brands are also exempt from that too.
Always bear in mind that there is a small monthly charge from ICOM (or via a dealer) for the use of LTE PoC radios and while that won't generally 'break the bank' over time that can add up especially if you are an operator of many handsets.
For on-site use the unit can connect to Wi-Fi of course, but that's hardly different communications than maybe legacy systems.
Overall this is a well designed handset and should provide years of effective communications, but do also consider the IP730D as an alternative especially if you need multi-communication-platform integration.

Example LTE PoC Radios

There are only a few examples of LTE push-to-talk over cellular radios on this site and that is entirely intentional. We have shown well known brands that most people will have heard of, and that all have good warranty available from us directly to our customers. So if you want to learn more about this technology, just take a look around and remember we're always here to talk too... and we can offer a pretty unique overview of equipment if that helps.

Is this really using Android 8.1? Well this platform might be for some users more than others, but there are both advantages and disadvantages ...
