Details about ATEX radios

The regulatory standards for managing explosive atmospheres and the compatibility of equipment and protective systems employed in them are known as ATEX. ATEX 95 (94/9/EC) and ATEX 137 (1999/92/EC) are EU directives that govern the supply and use of equipment in potentially explosive atmospheres, respectively. The name ATEX comes from the French title of Directive 94/9/EC.

So it's absolutely essential that the right equipment is used otherwise there could be serious and fatal accidents because of incorrectly specified products being used. Communications with radios are high on the list and the correct choice is critical. We show just a few examples below, but our specialised website at atex-radios.co.uk shows you much more than here... we recommend you visit it for more important information. ATEX Two-way Radios

Essential for Safety

There is far more to the aspect of using SAFE ATEX standards radios than many might imagine. As well as the portable handset itself, there is the question of accessories! That's right, the accessories used must be to the same standard as the radio - and often most incompatible accessories will not work. In fact many radios check the compatibility and whether the accessories are genuine products made to the correct standard. Typical ATEX equipment can cover two main areas as discussed on our ATEX website, but example information is below:

Entel's HT925 / 985 Atex radio is an analogue, intrinsically safe radio. The IP68-certified portable includes a high-contrast backlit display with scrolling text for text messaging and menu navigation. FFSK signalling, as well as variable point voice scrambler, channel scanning, shunting mode, personal attack alarm, whisper mode, and lone worker, are among the features.

Your HT9X5, if dealer enabled, will display a battery cycle count each time you turn on your radio, thanks to the newest clever Lithium-Ion battery technology. It will also notify you when your battery life is about to run out for your convenience. Its MIL-STD 810C/D/E/F construction, IP68 rated handheld allows for text messaging and easy navigation. Features include:

  • IP68 rated submersible (5 metres for 1 hour) 1800mAh Li-Ion battery MILSTD 810C/D/E/F
  • Future features can be added with a flash upgrade
  • Accessory socket that is durable
  • There are 255 channels available
  • 8-button keyboard
  • Graphic LCD display that scrolls
  • The naming of channels
  • Control with a multi-function encoder
  • Annotation of the voice (option)
  • Bluetooth
  • Priority scan and much more

Here is Our opinion ...

All ATEX radios are built to the standards required for the particular needs, - intrinsically safe, for use in gas and oil, chemicals and nuclear, security, marine and other sectors where safety is otherwise inherently compromised by using non ATEX equipment.

If you already use ATEX equipment (whatever it might be) then you will be painfully familiar with the standard and likely you will adhere to exactly what is required to stay safe in dangerous or hazardous areas. But there are so many potential working environments that are unsafe, but many users don't even know it, And they risk causing serious threats simply by not knowing that they are really creating a problem that might just go badly wrong.

Often some of the most unsuspecting working environments used by untrained employees could be a cause for concern. We often cite an industry that does have untrained employees; for example, a bakery. Many ordinary employees might simply not realise this, but factually when flour or other ingredients become suspended in the air, that alone can generate an explosive situation; it's just waiting for a two-way radio to create some sort of spark ... and bang, up it all goes with the potentially resulting fatalities.

And it's not 'just' the accident and the fatal results that could happen either. The Health and Safety Executive certainly would be on the case of the company immediately, and with fines that could potentially go in to the tens of millions of pounds, some companies might not survive ... and that in itself creates unemployment for others that worked in the business.

Unlike most 'radio' companies, our approach is not to 'just grab' sales via the internet, but we do feel that there has to be an element of education - or at least drawing the readers attention to some of the sort of things that could be dangerous ... and at the very least we can instill in to the reader that they need to think carefully about anything safety related, not least the environment that they work in.
